A few weeks ago I was alerted to an event at the Miami Marine Stadium:
Dying to explore Miami Marine Stadium? We’ve got your golden ticket! On Saturday, September 20, the National Trust for Historic Preservation will open the gates as street artists from around the world are unleashed inside Miami’s most iconic building – paint brushes and spray cans in hand.
Their mission? To create stunning new murals inspired by the stadium and the grassroots campaign to save it.
Participants will receive full access to the site as the new murals are installed, as well as a special photographic print of other pieces created as part of the ART History – Friends of Miami Marine Stadium Mural Project – an innovative fundraising effort that is enlisting contemporary artists from around the world to help bring Miami Marine Stadium back to life.
There are two tour times – 2:00 PM and 4:00 PM – and a limited number of tickets are available to the general public
Even though I immediately logged in to purchase my ticket, the 4:00 tour was already sold out. No worries, 2:00 worked for me. Both tours were sold out in less than a week. I was so excited to visit the Marine Stadium again. The last time I’d been there was for the 1990 Fourth of July “Pops by the Bay” performance of the Philharmonic Orchestra of Florida with fireworks in the background. It was a magical experience that cannot be matched in any other venue.
Unfortunately, today’s tour was abruptly cancelled. From what I have been able to gather from FaceBook, the artists were there, but the tours were cancelled due to “last minute logistics.” I am horribly disappointed, but I am consoling myself by again watching this amazing video from WFPF’s Parkour Playhouse at the Miami Marine Stadium:
Hopefully the tours will be rescheduled soon. In the meantime, if you (like me) want to see the Miami Marine Stadium returned to its former glory – open to the public for concerts, boat races and Fourth of July fireworks – be sure to visit Friends of Miami Marine Stadium for information on how to help.
