November 26 is Small Business Saturday 2016. According to Wikipedia, “Small Business Saturday is an American shopping holiday held on the Saturday after U.S. Thanksgiving during one of the busiest shopping periods of the year. First observed on November 27, 2010, it is a counterpart to Black Friday and Cyber Monday, which feature big box retail and e-commerce stores respectively. By contrast, Small Business Saturday encourages holiday shoppers to patronize brick and mortar businesses that are small and local.” In the case of Skyward Kites, the local business actually resides in a solar-powered trailer at Haulover Park on Miami Beach.
Born and raised in South Florida, owner Dan Ward has been selling kites and windsocks at Skyward Kites since 1984. His first shop was on South Beach until moving in 1992. Located at Haulover Park for more than two decades now, Dan says, “We are seeing our second generation coming out and flying, which to me just tickles me pink.” Skyward Kites boasts “the largest selection of kites, windsocks and wind spinners in Miami” and will help assemble the kites. They “will even give you kite flying tips to make you a kite flying pro in minutes” as their 4/5 star Yelp reviews confirm.
Skyward Kites sponsors annual kite festivals, typically the 3rd Sunday in October, and Kite Days every 3rd Sunday in February. Both events are held Haulover Park. Skyward Kites also hosts “Kite Parties” for birthday and other special events. Kite Parties include a 15 x 30 foot party tent, sound system, five picnic tables with benches and three serving tables.
Skyward Kites is open year round, but as Dan notes, “our best kite flying days are from October through May with the cooler, dryer ocean breezes” which makes a kite the perfect Miami gift to purchase on Small Business Saturday.
