On Wednesday, Miami Virgin Group Founder Sir Richard Branson and Virgin Voyages President/CEO Tom McAlpin unveiled their terminal plans for PortMiami.
The proposed terminal would be the base for two of Virgin’s cruise ships currently under construction: the Scarlet Lady and a yet-to-be-named ship. The new 100,000-square-foot cruise terminal would be located on the northwest side of the port and, if approved by Miami-Dade County, construction will begin in 2019 with projected completion by November 2021.
Miami-based architects from Arquitectonica are working with Virgin Voyages to design the terminal, which will feature a classic South Florida tropical theme with a modern twist. The rooftop design will give the impression of a palm tree grove, allowing natural daylight into the two-story glass building.
Virgin Voyages is an 18+ adults-only cruise company. According to their press release:
“Virgin Voyages’ first ship the Scarlet Lady was designed to reflect a yacht’s sleek luxury. Featuring spaces designed by some of the top names in contemporary interiors, the Scarlet Lady will be Adult-by-Design, a sanctuary at sea for the 18+ traveler. A dose of ‘Vitamin Sea’ will be naturally intertwined across the entire ship, with well-being activated through a mix of high-energy moments coupled with relaxation and rejuvenation. The Scarlet Lady will also feature alluring entertainment and 20+ world-class intimate eateries onboard. Putting a twist on luxury, which the company refers to as Rebellious Luxe, Virgin Voyages will offer incredible value for its sailors with all restaurants, group fitness classes, soft drinks, and many more Virgin surprises included within the voyage fare. The Scarlet Lady, will sail from Miami to the Caribbean in 2020.”
The Scarlet Lady will sail from PortMiami Terminal F until Terminal V is completed. The first cruise is expected to sail in April 2020, with Cuba as her first destination. Bookings will open soon.
Branson also hinted at other projects, including a Virgin Hotels Miami location. They are currently looking for an appropriate site.
“It’s just great to be based here. We’re getting very involved with Miami,” Branson said. “I’m sure there’ll be lots of other fun, wonderful things that we’ll be doing here in Miami in years to come.”
