David Datuna may be in a bunch of trouble for eating a banana during Miami Art Week. Or maybe it was art?
Rewind to yesterday when the banana, duct taped to a wall by artist Maurizio Cattelan, sold for $120,000. Cattelan is best known outside of art circles for his 2017 $6-million “golden throne” toilet stolen from England’s Blenheim Palace this past summer. This current art work is… or was… called “The Comedian”.
Today, Datuna apparently needed a quick snack, so he ate the world’s most expensive banana. According to TMZ: “Datuna literally walked up and stripped the brown, aging banana from the wall it was taped to and peeled it open in front of lots of shocked onlookers … who couldn’t believe it.”
On Instagram, he called his performance “Hungry Artist” and posted some aftermath footage of what appears to be gallery personnel sitting him down to take his info. Based on what we can tell, this is actually a no-no … the banana is NOT supposed to be tampered with … although the fruit itself is allowed to be replaced on a continuous basis as needed.
It all seems a little bananas to me. Now I’m hungry.
