MUVE Miami – Citizen Science Workday – Virginia Key
August 13, 2016 @ 10:00 am - 12:00 pmFREE
Volunteers are now working to monitor the habitat restoration using citizen science. Each month, volunteers survey for birds, monitor growth of new vegetation on the dune, collect water quality data, and observe changes in the landscape.
This event will begin at 10am and will end at noon. Please bring a water bottle (we will have cold water for refills) and wear cool, comfortable clothes. We will have no plastic cups available! The site gets direct sun, so keep sun protection in mind (lightweight long sleeves and pants are perfect).
We will complete a trio of citizen science activities at the restoration site:
- Citizen science beach cleanup: volunteers collect trash from the beach and log each item using Marine Debris Tracker, a free smartphone and tablet app. Back at home, you can view the data from their collection in an Excel file and as a graphical map.
- Tree phenology and monitoring: volunteers observe newly planted trees at our restoration site, specifically measuring the diameter of the tree trunk (to assess growth) and whether the tree is losing leaves, has budding leaves, fruits, or flowers. We submit these data to Project BudBurst, a national database of tree phenology.
- Naturalist walk: volunteers walk the restoration site, looking for birds, butterflies, and other wildlife using the area as habitat, then log these observations with iNaturalist, a smartphone app.
Directions and Meeting Spot:
If you’re coming from the mainland, go toward Key Biscayne, over the Rickenbacker to Virginia Key. Turn left after the light at MAST Academy onto Arthur Lamb Rd. You will pass a toll booth; let the attendant know you’re there to volunteer at the North Point. Follow the road to the right at the fork and park in the dirt lot at the end of the road, where the Virginia Key Mountain Bike trails begin. This is not the beach parking lot! There is no address for this site, but you can enter “Virginia Key Mountain Bike Trail” into Google Maps for directions. We will meet at the parking lot and walk to the dune together, after a short briefing.
