Alys Beach, South Walton
Alys Beach, located in the Florida panhandle, was founded with a great care, which includes creating a place that works in concert with the natural environment. Using the traditional town as the model, a healthy mix of homes and buildings and a well-connected street network make travel by foot and bicycle the preferred way to get around. The streets themselves are an innovative design of cobblestone pavers hand-set in deep layers of gravel, allowing about one-third of the rain that falls to gently filter into the ground.
Parks and street-side landscapes are plentiful, featuring mostly native plants that are perfectly adapted to local conditions, reducing the need for water, fertilizer, and pesticides. These and other community-wide environmental features have made Alys Beach the first community in Northwest Florida certified as a green development by the Florida Green Building Coalition.
One of Alys Beach’s most visible features is the palette of white roofs and walls—an adaptation to the local environment that reflects much of the sun’s heat and helps keep the town cooler. The cool roofs and walls hint at more smart green features inside homes, where a host of measures like spray foam insulation, long-lasting materials, and efficient appliances help to conserve water and energy and increase durability. In fact, all homes are required to be third-party certified as green homes by the Florida Green Building Coalition, making Alys Beach the first community in Florida to do so.
The vision for Alys Beach is carefully crafted to celebrate the public realm of streets, parks, pedestrian paths, and great civic buildings in a manner reminiscent of the world’s most beloved seaside towns. In recognition of the strong draw of the sea, a network of streets run perpendicular to the beach, guaranteeing warm light and views to the Gulf, and funneling cooling sea breezes into the heart of the town.
Streets are well-connected in a way that brings daily needs within a short walking distance. The intimate design of streets, nestled by buildings and softened by landscapes of native and ornamental plants, makes walking and bicycling safe and pleasant. Parks and public spaces are abundant, from small pocket parks along pedestrian ways to the more open Central Park.
Alys Beach was designed by Duany Plater-Zyberk and Company, a Miami-based firm that is the recognized leader in traditional town planning, having completed over 300 projects worldwide. DPZ used timeless patterns of town design to inspire differing building types, landscapes, and street designs throughout Alys Beach, giving an incredible variety of experiences, from urban to rural, in a single beachside town. A less than ten minute walk through Alys Beach takes one from the white sands of the beach, through an active town center of shops, restaurants, and outdoor cafes, down streets of elegant courtyard homes, and all the way to a nature preserve of wildflowers and towering pine trees.

Lakewood Ranch, Sarasota
Lakewood Ranch is an 8,500 acre master-planned community comprised of seven villages located just north of Sarasota, FL. Since 2005, every new village built in Lakewood has been built green. These homes are healthier and more energy efficient than traditional homes but still convenient, comfortable and even stylish.
Each of the seven villages of Lakewood Ranch features distinctive neighborhoods that offer a wide variety of home designs to choose from single and multi-family homes to townhomes and villas.
