Alys Beach, South Walton
Alys Beach, located in the Florida panhandle, was founded with a great care, which includes creating a place that works in concert with the natural environment. Using the traditional town as the model, a healthy mix of homes and buildings and a well-connected street network make travel by foot and bicycle the preferred way to get around. The streets themselves are an innovative design of cobblestone pavers hand-set in deep layers of gravel, allowing about one-third of the rain that falls to gently filter into the ground.
Parks and street-side landscapes are plentiful, featuring mostly native plants that are perfectly adapted to local conditions, reducing the need for water, fertilizer, and pesticides. These and other community-wide environmental features have made Alys Beach the first community in Northwest Florida certified as a green development by the Florida Green Building Coalition.
One of Alys Beach’s most visible features is the palette of white roofs and walls—an adaptation to the local environment that reflects much of the sun’s heat and helps keep the town cooler. The cool roofs and walls hint at more smart green features inside homes, where a host of measures like spray foam insulation, long-lasting materials, and efficient appliances help to conserve water and energy and increase durability. In fact, all homes are required to be third-party certified as green homes by the Florida Green Building Coalition, making Alys Beach the first community in Florida to do so.
The vision for Alys Beach is carefully crafted to celebrate the public realm of streets, parks, pedestrian paths, and great civic buildings in a manner reminiscent of the world’s most beloved seaside towns. In recognition of the strong draw of the sea, a network of streets run perpendicular to the beach, guaranteeing warm light and views to the Gulf, and funneling cooling sea breezes into the heart of the town.
Streets are well-connected in a way that brings daily needs within a short walking distance. The intimate design of streets, nestled by buildings and softened by landscapes of native and ornamental plants, makes walking and bicycling safe and pleasant. Parks and public spaces are abundant, from small pocket parks along pedestrian ways to the more open Central Park.
Alys Beach was designed by Duany Plater-Zyberk and Company, a Miami-based firm that is the recognized leader in traditional town planning, having completed over 300 projects worldwide. DPZ used timeless patterns of town design to inspire differing building types, landscapes, and street designs throughout Alys Beach, giving an incredible variety of experiences, from urban to rural, in a single beachside town. A less than ten minute walk through Alys Beach takes one from the white sands of the beach, through an active town center of shops, restaurants, and outdoor cafes, down streets of elegant courtyard homes, and all the way to a nature preserve of wildflowers and towering pine trees.

FishHawk Ranch, Tampa Bay
We’re so proud that the Florida Green Building Coalition has named the FishHawk Ranch™ community as a “green” community, the first in Hillsborough County and the largest in the Tampa area. The National Arbor Day Foundation® and the State of Florida have also honored the FishHawk Ranch community preservation efforts. Here are a few reasons why our families enjoy a healthier life in the FishHawk Ranch community.
Lifestyle: Living an active life in the FishHawk Ranch community is possible at every turn. With 25 miles of trails, we can choose a different course every day, whether on bike or on foot. Our neighborhood parks and pools are located a short distance from every home, with a variety of places to play, workout and swim.
Open Space: Thousands of our trees have been preserved throughout the 1,300 acres of restored and preserved wetlands and wildlife habitats. In fact, our trails were carefully designed to minimize the impact on existing plants and wildlife.
Water: Development best practices have been incorporated to protect our natural aquifer and enhance our water quality. Drought-resistant native plants are featured in common areas to conserve our water. Use of storm water and reclaimed water via a central irrigation system helps save valuable drinking water. And our swimming pools located throughout the community reduce the need for individual pools at home.
Homes: Conservation begins at home. Approximately 30% of our home sites allow for solar energy capability. The FishHawk Ranch homebuilders are encouraged to offer this alternative and other green home construction standards. Educational programs provided by onsite “green” specialists make green education, training and resources available to all FishHawk Ranch homeowners. Visit the Green Home Guide for more tips on how to live green.
Community: The FishHawk Ranch community is green by design. Our schools are located in the community or within walking and biking distance for most everyone to save energy and reduce congestion. Native trees line our streets, providing a canopy of shade and help to counteract automobile traffic. Utilities are located underground when possible, preserving our valuable trees and open space. Plus, onsite recycling is provided at all our parks, community centers and playing fields.

Harmony in Osceola
The Town of Harmony is all about environmental intelligence. In fact, it’s founded on the concept that people lead healthier lives when they live in close contact with nature. To that end, Harmony offers a distinctive land plan and architectural look that celebrates Florida’s unique ambiance. Its green-certified homes are situated amid thousands of acres of Central Florida nature preserves, two large lakes where residents enjoy fishing and boating, as well as multiple walkable trails and parks.
Located in pastoral Osceola County along U.S. Highway 192, 26 miles west of Interstate 95, Harmony has earned a community-wide green certification by the Florida Green Building Coalition. Each home here is built to U.S. Environmental Protection Agency ENERGY STAR® standards as a minimum. In addition, Harmony is proud to feature street and public-area lighting certified compliant by the International Dark Sky Association.

Lakewood Ranch, Sarasota
Lakewood Ranch is an 8,500 acre master-planned community comprised of seven villages located just north of Sarasota, FL. Since 2005, every new village built in Lakewood has been built green. These homes are healthier and more energy efficient than traditional homes but still convenient, comfortable and even stylish.
Each of the seven villages of Lakewood Ranch features distinctive neighborhoods that offer a wide variety of home designs to choose from single and multi-family homes to townhomes and villas. Homes range in size from around 1,000 sq. ft. to 10,000 sq. ft. Amenities of the individual neighborhoods vary but may include parks, trails, dog parks, fitness centers, lakes, club houses, golf courses and more.
Outdoor activities are an important aspect of this community and Lakewood Ranch has first class facilities for recreational sports. Both the Sarasota Polo Club and the Sarasota International Cricket Club are located within Lakewood. The polo club has nine polo fields (130 acres), an open pavilion and clubhouse. The cricket club’s permanent laser leveled cricket facility is considered worthy of world class competition.
The green qualities of Lakewood Ranch such as the preserve and the water reclamation for irrigation have led Lakewood to be named by the Florida Green Building Coalition as a green community. The community is the largest of its kind in the state of Florida to receive this distinction.
